The last sighting of Mallory and Irvine were on the last "step" before the summit, it's a vertical climb about 10 feet high and the last obstacle before the summit. However, they became obscured from the observers on the base camp by cloud and were never seen again (until Mallory's remains were found a few years ago). A frantic search of Mallory's remains failed to retrieve the camera (and any 'photos) carried by the pair, leading to speculation that Irvines remains may hold the key to the question. I belive it possible they did reach the summit, an achivement, considering the difference in equipment used in the two attempts almost 30 years apart. Tweed clothing and oxygen systems that were in thier infancy. (I don't think they were used on that expedition, but were on the 1921/22 expeds). However, part of the challange of Everest is getting back alive.

Some people seem to think that they did. When Mallory's remains were found below the summit, his Snow goggles were found in his pocket. This,to some people assumed that they were on the way down,as Mallory wouldn't have needed to wear them so late in the day as the sun was going down. They would only have been worn on the way up early in the day to counter the glare of the sun.It would be nice to think that they did and that they achieved their goal, even at such a high price.

So far, there is no definite evidence either way. My personal guess is no, but at this stage there is no way to tell. When they found Mallory's body they were hoping to find a camera, but did not. Even if they find Irving and possibly the camera, it is unlikely there would be a viable image obtainable.
I think it will be one of those questions that go forever unanswered.

Its doubtful. When they found Mallory's body it suggested a big fall from the North ridge probably from about 8,000metres. I doubt even if Irving's body was found it would give any evidence to the contrary.
No one will ever know, and I think for people to go on too much about it is a bit disrespectful to Hillary and Tenzing's monumental effort.

Yes they did, it has now been proven by the limited photographs found on Mallory's body. However the target is to get up and down alive.
