Personally, I say the cat is better for most people. Dogs require a lot more maintenance -- they need to be walked and poop-scooped after, and you can't leave them home to go to work for ten hours and expect them to be cooped up in the house. I LOVE dogs, but I feel like many people who have them do not have the time to devote to them and consequently, they don't have the quality of life they deserve. They are a huge commitment. On the other hand, a cat can be left at home, it does not require any time outside (a veterinarian will tell you there is NO GOOD reason to allow a cat to roam--since they are bird killers), and since a cat is rather aloof by nature, they are not terribly upset to spend 10 or 12 hours a day at home alone while you work. Then when you are home, they'll cuddle up near you and roll over on their back and sigh and be a companion (all right, NOT to the degree of a dog!). Anyway, my answer is not because I don't like dogs, it's just because I DO love both dogs and cats -- I just think people should be realistic about which pet fits their lifestyle and ability to provide a good life for them.

I'm partial to dogs myself, and I'm not quite sure what you want--an opinion or advice--, but if you want advice for a pet for yourself...
It depends on your living conditions and your own personal preferences.
If you travel a lot and don't have time for a pet or anyone to take care of it, my suggestion is a cat. They, as others have said, do what they want. They can be affectionate, it mostly depends on the cat. And their fairly low maintenance, cleaning of the litter box and the occasional trip to the vet's. However, depending on the cat, they can be less social or more social, more affectionate or more stay-the-heck-away-or-I-will-scratch/bite-you, etc... You get it.
If you don't travel and want more of a companion animal, dogs are better. They are affectionate, loyal, and--with training--can be obedient. You can play with them, walk with them, and even talk to them. There was actually a study and owning a dog OR a cat helps your blood pressure (and some other things, I can't remember) and you can live longer. Generally. Anyway, as for care, it depends on the breed. Different breeds (as well as sizes) are more prone to different health problems. They're also varying in how much food, exercise, brushing, etc. they need. There are plenty of breed books out there telling how much of what different breeds need, but my suggestion would be a half-breed or mutt as they are less prone to diseases and so generally live longer.
Overall either is a good option, it really depends on--as I said--your living conditions and what you want in/for a pet (a roommate or a companion). It's also really the luck of the draw in what cat/dog you choose.
It's entirely up to you and I hope I was somewhat of a help, if you are actually looking for a pet, : ).
P.S. DOGS ARE THE BEST BUT CATS ARE GOOD TOO!

Cats without a doubt.

IIRC, there was a poll/survey taken just like this one, and the results were, more families had/have cats than dogs. Even high profile sports figures have cats, instead of dogs.

Imo, cats are a lot easier to take care of, plus cats are more independent.

A cat. Cats don't yip and bark all night or at odd times or at everyone in your house. Cats do not come running up to you with a tail between their legs. Cats are quiet and free spirited. I think why people like dogs so much is that dogs do as they're told, just as a slave would, and mankind can certainly associate with that type of behavior.

I love Cats and Dogs. But you know; a Dog has a Master and Cats have a Staff.
Cats are more independent.
Dogs demand Attention.

Cat is a better pet because dogs are too high maintenance!

Dogs are a perfect in every way! My pug sleeps next to me in bed and is my little shadow every were I go...it is so cute! A cat well they are just there if they want some attention is the only time they come around...not for me!

Most people say dogs. Dogs are great, but so are cats. My two cats come when I call them. They stay indoors, and don't have to be walked. They are much easier to take care of.

It depends on what you want. Do you want an animal that will follow you blindly or do you want an animal that can think for itself and makes you earn it's respect and love?

I have both cats and dogs at home. I couldn't decide. Both are very unique in their own way.

I like dogs better because they do more. You can take them outside and play fetch or go for a run with them. I do not like it when Cats kneed or scratch the wall.
