If they both came out in the same year, I doubt either would win best picture, they would cancel each other out.

I have seen both a few times each and like Gladiator MUCH better. Maximus is much more sympathetic than Leonidas. Even though Leonidas loved his family, he was raised to be cruel and combative, and I found that I just didn't really care if he lived or died. Maximus was a more noble, caring person and his plight was more immediate and relevant to normal people. As far as awards, I think Russell Crowe had a better opportunity to show a range of emotions and give us the feel that he was the better actor. Gerard Butler just had to show off his muscles and act tough. I think Gladiator still would have won best picture.

they're really 2 different types of movies. gladiator was more intricately character driven and used CGI to enhance realistic effects. 300 was more action driven and used CGI to give the movie a sepia look and over the top effects. you really can't compare the two fairly, they are both good in their own right.

I just saw 300 a few days ago. Perhaps it's the newness of me having just seen it, but I think 300 is the better film.

Good question!
