My friend thought she won a sweepstake and she recieved a 4000 something check she was told to deposit it and then wait for it to clear and then send the tax part back and she didnt have to use her money but use the money she deposited and that she would be recieving the rest of her winnings, she waited for the check to clear than western unioned it. Is there anyway she can do to get her money back, hire a lawyer, find the people anything???????

She can call the police, but there isn't really much they can do. Try the forums at 419eater.com, they have a lot of support for people who have been scammed. The police may be able to find the people, but usually for things like this, the money is long gone.

It is going to be hard. Once my husband heard an add for a book on moving to Florida over the radio.We sent $79.or so to receive this book. We never received it . When I called the phone number they gave us, they told us the book wasn't even published yet. That we were on a waiting list for the book. well it has been over 20 years and I am still waiting.

Scammers prey on people who want "something for nothing". She will probably find no trail of the people she sent the money to. She should report the fraud to the bank though, as they may now have her account number and use it to withdraw additional money.

I'd say try to find out who was running the sweepstakes and speak with an attorney to see if she can sue for fraud.
