I have had both when in NYC and in Montreal when I was a chef, in both citys you have a number of choices for fresh and great tasting bagels, one caution if you compare them, Montreal bagels tend to be smaller, chewier and not a sweet as NYC bagels and are more then likely to be baked in a stone wood fired oven so there is a bit of a smokiness.
NYC bagels are more bread like, chewy and have nice inside body, and will be 30% bigger that there Montreal cousins, so there is a bit of a difference, even here in Toronto we have several places for fresh baked bagels and even those are different as some are made by eastern european bakerys and tend to be even bigger and a textural difference,

There are others but those are the two big names here.
Check out the local Montreal Mirror newpaper. Each year it polls its readers and they produce a list of the best places in Montreal to eat certain foods. They have a category for "Best Bagel". The link for 2006 is below:

i think of that bagels began in Poland throughout the 1500 or 1600s and unfold directly to Russia. probable the Jews accompanied them there. while they moved to us of a they delivered the recipe with them. via fact they are quite much less costly to make, they appropriate an immigrant inhabitants. And with those different joys, cream cheese and lox, or smoked salmon, they seem to be a satisfaction. although, while stale they alter into "rocks": a legend explains that throughout WW2 American pilots threw old bagels out of their planes as added weapons. yet a clean toasted bagel, the two undeniable or with a splash butter is scrumptious and extremely filling so makes a sturdy, decrease priced meal.
