I agree that it varies, although I'm not sure I've ever seen a gene that takes up a whole megaBase, so I'm not sure about a million. I'd say anywhere from a few hundred base pairs to several thousand if not hundreds of thousands.
A large reason for the variation in eukaryotes is the variable size of introns. The gene is more than just the coding region of the protein, it's also the introns, promoter, etc. So some introns are huge, and some are small and that varies the amount that is in a gene.

Well if you took all of the bps in a human genome and divided them by how many genes there are in said genome you could get an average but it wouldnt tell you much.
This is because the number of base pairs in a gene varies completely from gene to gene.....hundreds to millions of bps
Is there a particular gene or type of gene you are interested in?

They are probably confusing the concept of three nucleotides = one codon. A codon is not the same as a gene. A gene is made up of a number of codons. Each codon represents an amino acid.
Also the person who said the human gene has a few billion base pairs is also wrong I think they are talking about the human GENOME which is a completely different thing.
The human genome has about 20,000 genes all of varying sizes!!!!!

Each gene will vary in size. There is no set average for all genes from every animal,plant,bacteria. I can say that the average gene size for a bacteria like E. coli is about 1000 bp.
