You're outside a room that only has one light bulb in it in the middle of the room and there is only one wooden door with no window on it going to and from the room. There is 3 light-switches on the wall one next to another beside the door. There are no windows, cracks or anything you would be able to see into the room. You only get one chance to open the door and that's after you flip ONE light switch to turn on the light inside the room. How do you know what light switch turns the light on before you even open the door?

The hole in the riddle is that you've not asked it correctly; It should read that you can flip any # of switches before entering the room, with only one chance to open the closed door. How would you know which switch operates the light ? The answer being that you flip one switch, leaving it on for 10 minutes. Then you turn it off and flip another switch and enter the room.

If the light is on, its the 2nd switch you used. If the light is off, but its warm it was the first switch you used. otherwise its the 3rd unused switch.

First of all, the light switch should be IN the room, not outside it. If this is the only switch though, the one next to the door should turn the light on.

First, I would take the switch cover off of the switches, and then I would take a volt meter to determine which switch had voltage on it. If they all did, then I would take some copper wire and bypass the switch altogether, making a complete circuit. Then, I would drill a hole in the door, so I can peek through it. Determine, buy connecting a wire between the leads on the switch, which switch the light was actually connected to, because the light would come on, without the switch being turned on. Once that is figured out, I would put the switch covers back on the switches, and turn on the light switch that was connected to the lightbulb. Then, walk through the door.

The one closest to the door is the room light. The other two control receptacles for lamps.

you can't "know" for certain, but traditionally, light switches closest to the door would turn the light on in the room...
