If you IM'd on a company computer they can, In that situation the computer is theirs and they have the right to monitor how its used and protect it from potential viruses that can effect the company's network

Secondly, they can do it because they can use it as a tool to see how employees are spending their day, are they working or screwing around on the Internet? Most companies have a policy against IM' ing during work hours or other non work related use of their computers.
