From experience of working at multiple resturants, there are a lot of factors that you need to consider.

First, what time are you eating? Busy periods like lunch and dinner are great times to go if you notice there is a lot of staff. This is a period in which most of the staff is working their hardest and means the quality of the food and service will be the best. Places where it seems like there are few numbers in staff at busy periods should show you that people hate working there and they mostly call in, so the others left there to work at "busting ***" and will most likely make mistakes. Slow periods are times when staff do most of their cooking and preparing for the next lunch or dinner, this could slow down your order. Also, never eat there when they close in the next hour, most of the time you get served old precooked food (there are very few resturants that don't do this).

Second, are the people friendly? You should be greeted like they are happy you walked in so they can do some work. If they don't give you a "what's up, welcome" or a greeting at all, this means they're pissed off you walked in the door because now they have to work and could care less about your visit.

Third, yeah the place should be clean and have a good smell. That just means the staff cares about what the place looks like, and that means that they want you to come in.

Uniforms sometimes matter and sometimes don't. Everyone hates tucking their shirt in, i guess the younger generation doesn't know why it looks more proper? Hats only matter to people cooking your food, so if you see a cook with no hat, you might have some hair with your salad.

One more last thing, and some may get mad at this but as a point from a non-smoker, if there are people that work there outside smoking, most of the time they should be doing something else besides smoking and are probably forgetting someone's order. Just a heads up.

Hope that helps.

In the past there's only been two reasons that I've turned around and left a restaurant before being seated. Number 1 the wait is too long and number 2 they are non-smoking.

If the restaurant had a foul odor or seemed all together dirty that would also make me turn around and leave. I've also been know to get up and leave a restaraunt after being seated if I haven't been attended to after 10 - 20 minutes (depending on how busy the restaurant is). I've even left after drinks have been served if the gap is service is ridiculously long -- but I've never left after my food order was placed.

Ive never been to one that was so dirty i wanted to leave...one summer it did seem like all fast food resturants were over populated with FLIES! We just didnt go for quite a while. The biggest thing that would make me leave would be if someone Itotally hated was either a customer or worked there...that would make me leave.

I look for eye contact from the hostess, friendliness and the overall look of the place as far as cleanliness. After seated, prompt service and again friendliness is expected. I will tip well if the service is good. Its not cheap to go out and eat. You expect to be treated right and in return the tip is generous. I understand the wait staff depends on the tips to make a living. But like any job you have to do it right to earn your pay.

First things first, I would not even pull into the parking lot if it is during the lunch or dinner hour a time of the day that it should be busy and it is not. That is a sign that tells me not to even bother. If I make it in the door, the overall cleanliness, if there is an odor that should not be for a restuarant then I would leave......

Fingerprints all over the door.

A lot of uncleaned, messy tables.

We just left a restaurant last week for that. Who wants to see a bunch of dirty tables and food all over the floors when entering. Imagine what the kitchen looks like....

Check the bathrooms,if they are dirty than you can be pretty sure that the restaurant doesn't care much about cleanliness....if the bathrooms are bad that the customers see & use just imagine what the kitchen is like!

i took my daughter to this restaurant, we got seated and asked what we wanted to drink, ordered our drinks and as we were looking throuhg our menu we scoped out the place but what made us leave was the service the waitress was rude and the service too long. we left but really if you really care then just ask the hostess questions and ask if you could look around before being seated. as for fast food places the best answer would be go straight to the bathroom and if its not clean the place in general is not clean.

I would immediately leave a restaurant if the minute I walk in the door the host/hostess don't greet me or have an attitude or if there is a weird smell.

My wife checks for cleanliness, the floor, booths, seats, windows, etc. I look for a smile and a cheery greeting. We have already walked out after waiting for a waitress to come to our table for more than 15 mins., just to be given a menu.
