Of course he's real; the problem is that folks nowadays are "believing" in a distortion of the real man. All sorts of myths and tradtions have gotten blurred into the modern understanding of Santa Claus bringing presents to kids who are good and write him letters with lists of requests each year.

The real Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas. He was a devout Christian who lived in the fourth century, A.D., in what is now southern Turkey. Orphaned early in life, he used his entire inheritance to care for the needy. He was made a bishop while still a young man, and was known for his particular generosity to children.

Understanding the story behind the real "santa" helps kids to learn the real spirit of Christmas. It's not about getting new toys from a magical elf. It's about learning from the example of the holy men and women who have come before us, who have made their lives an imitation of Jesus'.

Hi, of course Santa Claus is real!!! I should know, he's my Dad!! I'm his main Christmas Fairy and we work really hard all year round, collecting the names and addresses of all the good children, so that we can be sure to deliver the right presents to the right houses. We oversee toy and game manufacturing to ensure that the gifts we deliver are of the highest quality and suitable for the rough and tumble that they will have to endure during hours of fun playtime. I am amazed that ANYONE could think that Santa Claus wasn't real!!! How would you feel if people started to question whether or not you were real? You're going to have to work very hard for the rest of this year now, to prove that you deserve the woolly jumper and six pairs of socks that are on your list up to now!!! Remember, we're watching you!!

As real as our faith in the Christmas spirit

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

A famous letter from Virgina O'Hanlon to the editorial of The New York Sun, first printed in 1897.

Oh yes. Many years ago I worked in Selfridges dept store. Every year Santa would come to the grotto. At this particular time my colleague had just split up with her partner so to cheer her up we went along to see him.
She sat on Santas lap and he asked her what she wanted for Christmas. She said "A new man."
Santa altered the tone of his voice and replied.. "OOh don't we all dear!"
Ho Ho Ho
That's a true story.

Of course - and don't forget there are children on this site. All these adult rumours are not good for them. There's enough doubt in the world without questioning dear old Santa.

Of course I am real. How do you think you get your presents at Christmas?

I am not like the Loch Ness Monster or the Great White Cornish Shark.

Of course he's real! Don't listen to the kid on the playground. Start checking your local Mall after Thanksgiving. He likes to hang out in malls at that time.
