Umm struggling to think of an equivalent in live Japanese drama of that quality. If you like Anime you may appreciate Only Yesterday but that's a little simpler and more childish in tone, Whisper of the Heart is great but a little conventional except for the fantasy...
Adult soft-hearted drama has been pretty intricate and interesting worthwhile Shall We Dance, Tony Takitani and Hana-Bi having edgily different romantic content (though Hana-Bi is also a bad cop violent drama so caution).
Sorry if I'm straining for examples...

For Japanese dramas, I really enjoyed Hotaru no Hikari, it's about a young working woman who falls in love with her boss. In public she is refined and ladylike, but at home she's messy and drinks beer. It's kinda funny. If that doesn't float your boat, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e is a good one. It's about a girl who goes to an all-boys academy in place of her brother and the close calls of other guys finding out her identity that ensue. Funny and romantic! I've seen the 2007 version but apparently there's a recent 2011 remake too. For Korean dramas, the most obvious would be Boys Before Flowers. It features a K-pop star in the cast and is wildly popular in Korea. Super dramatic and romantic. Coffee Prince is also very popular and is famous for it's boys love theme but there is also a lot of romance. Hope you enjoy these and if you want more recommendations feel free to ask :)

You should go to www.jdorama.com which has info of all Japanese drama in the past few years. Personally recommend these:
1 Litre of Tears (I probably cried more than 1L of tears when I watched it. SOOOOOOO touching.)
Nobuta wo Produce (played by two very famous stars in Japan, it made a great hit in Japan at end of 2005 and first half yr of 2006. Whole country was crazy over their theme song, too.)
Liar Game (very nice plot, make me keep following the story and finish the whole series in 1 day....)
My Boss My Hero (adapted from same name Korean movie. Plot is not so realistic and crazy, but very hilarious.)
DragonZakura (High School background, about a lawyer teaching high schoolers to study and get enrolled to Tokyo University. But it's more than just reading books. Pretty funny the creative way of study strategies he made up with.)

I haven't watched crying out love ,in the center of the world. I think its a sad story. Since you like the sad stories, you can try watching "A litre of tears".
if you like romance, you can watch hana yori dango and hana yori dango .
