i am looking for hostel of low cost hotel accomodation in paris for christmas. i know the districts go upto around 18(?) EME. I want to be central enough to be able to not have to catch extensive transportation. if i can even walk to some of the landmarks, that'd be great. safety is also important.
where do you recommend?

I stayed in the 11th near the Bastille and found it to be very safe, convenient to the metro and close to plenty of cheap (and good) food options. You can't really walk to any landmarks other than the bastille monument though.

PS You'll probably get better/more responses if you post this at:

As mentioned above, you'll get more answers if you post this in Paris rather than San Francisco.

you can walk to landmarks around paris from anywhere. if you are looking for low cost you cannot be fussy about where you are staying in paris....as in any city ...
