First of all, don't buy their talk about how stressful it is. They love it. Many politicians enjoy the constant ego boost of meeting supporters on the campaign trail and being in constant demand on talk shows and debates far more than the mundane tasks of everyday life in Congress or as a governor.
Secondly, the fame is valuable, way beyond the winner. The 30 people running who lose will write books, get appointed to cabinet posts and ambassadorships if their party wins, become a major lock for reelection in their current office, or maybe take a lucrative job on the lecture circuit or with a lobbying firm. There may be a big payday for all of them. (Heck, Gore won an Oscar!)

I think people need to realize that all of these candidates really believe that the country would be best off with them as president. Even when you have a candidate carefully calibrating things like their accent (like Hillary), it's just because she thinks that the means will be justified by having her be President instead of a less qualified person.
As much as you may dislike the policies of Edwards or Bush or Giuliani or anybody else, the fact is that these people really do think that they're doing what is best for the country. They simply have a different view of what is best for the country. It is extremely, extremely rare for a politician to take money in exchange for doing something that could hurt the country (see: politicians indicted for the Abramoff scandal).

guy, have u had a marvelous style of Koolaide... Blaming the democrats for negativity? Please. The dems are a sorry lot, yet i'm not feeling extraordinarily unfavourable approximately them or the rustic. extremely, you sound like a mouthpiece for Karl Rove. As for no be counted if or not George Bush is devil, nicely that has yet to be desperate. If there is this type of element as god and the devil (you be responsive to, the only George claims to communicate to in his prayers) then he could desire to swear to him or her and tell the actuality below oath--something he and his minions won't do approximately something--from 9/11 to Gonzalez and each and all the firings. If there's a feeling of negativity, i could say it emanates not from democrats, yet from republicans because of the fact they're understanding that the occasion is almost over and each physique has to %. their bags and bypass residing house. yet, lower back, it feels extra useful daily from the place i'm sitting. after all, we are approximately to be rid of arguably the main inept, moronic president this usa has ever had. Your chum Tocqueville did not have the cyber web and the fluidity that it extremely is incorporating into this era. suggestion flows at the instant are not constrained to the voices of newspapers or speeches. He on no account had television the two, yet even that medium has been shown to be very controllable. i'm uncertain the cyber web and regardless of later technologies it spawns would be. In different words, in actuality at many extra fingertips and could stay. As such, i could replace 'unfavourable' with 'extra helpful counseled.'

Believe it or not, there are people out there you want to help change the way we live, and how our grandkids live, and who want to be remembered in the history books, and records of time.
Why is Obama running? And, Hillary? And, that Richardson guy from New Mexico? A black man, a woman, and a Native American. Gee whiz....that would change history, and certainly get a half page in a high school history book. The first_____________ to be elected President in 2008.
"nuf said."
My vote goes to "Captain Morgan", his record speaks for itself.
"No one has led more unforgettable parties than The Captain. For The Captain, the party has always come first....
It is progress when political parties are more about politics and less about parties? We say NO!" -excerpt from the 2004 Captain Morgan Presidential Campaign.

A President of the USA will make a mark in history. Pretty much as long as humans are alive, even if it's just a footnote, they will be remembered. That's the closest thing to immortality we have.

Power and fame. That's what I think. I wish I could honestly say it was a desire to make our country better, but I think the power is more of an enticement than even that.
