"At various times in history, the White House has been known as the "President's Palace," the "President's House," and the "Executive Mansion." President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901."

The house originally was a light pink color. After the British burned it during the war of 1812 they needed to repaint it. They had white paint and so it was painted white. It has remained white ever since. Tradition. Nothing but tradition says it has to be white. It could be purple, for that matter, but then it would be called the president's house as it originally was and that just sounds weird.
