see, i'm going to university soon and i still have no idea what i should do. I always wanted to go into healthcare, but then i see all the negative aspects of being a nurse or midwife etc etc..(i dont want to be a doctor though). Then i want to go into a computing course and i get all confused as to what the future prospects are.
i'm the type of person that HATES giving presentations. I could kill myself and not give a presentation - THATS ONE OF MY PROBLEMS WITH UNIVERSITY. do we have to be assessed that way? If not, i'll have to put up with it. but what would you think is the best route ?

A survey once revealed that when people were asked what they were most afraid of, the first result was giving a speech, the second was dying, where one might conclude that they would rather die than give a speech. Your fear coincides with these results. As for your direction, try not to direct yourself too far ahead. You seem to indicate that you'd like to look into nursing and/or computing. Perhaps if you go ahead with this, you might find some way of combining the two. And yes, there as negative aspects, but can/will they balance out with the positive energy and results you may encounter? One last note: With regard to presentations, they can indeed be daunting, and yet I've found that the more comfortable I am with the material, the more enthusiastic and comfortable I am with the presentation. Remember that presentations can take on many forms, from lectures, to panel discussions, to whole group interaction, to hands on. I empathize with you and hope you remember to take the time to have FUN as you explore new learning opportunities! Peace

Unfortunately, presentations are pretty much a fact of life in the business world, so it's probably a good idea to try and get comfortable with them now. Is it the public speaking aspect you don't like? If so, consider some extracurricular activities that'll teach you some tricks and help you feel more confident, like debate or acting.

As for what you should study...well, you're not there yet. You don't have to decide until you've had more of a chance to explore. If you're confused about what a particular computer science track will prepare you for and what the pitfalls are, talk to academic advising, the professors, the career center, and/or alumni. Ditto healthcare. More importantly, take the intro courses and see which option you actually like best.

I know the feeling. The first year is generally all of your general education courses, this will give you some time to decide what exactly you would like to do. If you're still not sure talk to a professor or the department head from each department. Presentations are inevitable. I have given a lot of group presentations though. Conquer your fears. No matter what field you go into you are going to have to address people--co-workers and bosses.

People change pretty drastically in college. Face your fears. Become good at things that you hate doing. By taking a class where you have to give presentations you will be able to get past your hate for it. This will be good for you in the long run -- no matter what direction you take.

As for choosing a career -- you don't have to do it now. Just take classes in your first year that give you the option to go off in different directions.
