I would like a double breast pump so I can pump both breasts at the same time. I plan to have two children and breastfeed as long as I can, so renting one, I think is too expensive. Is there a good one I can buy??? I think I've seen the Medalia (spelling?) What are some really good/ professional type that you can buy that you can take with you to work?

I work for myself and travel around doing contract work as a speech therapist for schools...so there is no discounts work can offer me.

I've heard good things about Ameda and Medela (their names are so similar!). Stay away from cheap pumps, like the ones you can buy at Walmart. They don't have much suction and are only good for very infrequent pumping. If you're not sure, why not try renting one for a month and see if you like it? You can either rent from hospitals or online.

add: Ameda Purely Yours also has a car charger, which means you can drive and pump! That might be the best choice for you. I commend you for wanting to breastfeed while having such a busy career life!

I would go with a Medela or Avent brand one.

The Medela Pump and Style is one of the most popluar ones out there and has stood the test of time and I can attest it is very user friendly.

As Avent as makes a double electric pump that was put out on the market about a year ago and I wish they had this out when I had a newborn. It is super nice and it has a hand style pump that allows you to set you own rythem and it remembers it. Plus my friends you can also use the pump as a hand held one for a quick convient pumping every now and then or if you are not by a plug. I haven't tried it out personally but I have 2 friends that raved about it and one of them bought it after buying the Medela.

I would also lookinto getting a hands free pumping bra. It is basically a tube top thing with holes in it to hold your pump in place when you are using it. This was a life saver since it is very annoyting to hold the pump up toward the end.

Medela are absolutely the best pumps around. I had a single for all my kids (3) and had an excessive amount of milk and it always did the trick and lasted for 3 kids. Just make sure you get an electric, not a manual as that's way too much work. The Medela Pump in Style has a handy carrying bag to use on the go. Good luck - breast is best!

The lactation nurses at my hospital recommend the Ameda Purely Yours for the reasons Tanya listed above.

That's the pump I used and I LOVED it!

By the way, the lactation nurses I know recommend only 2 brands, Ameda or Medela, they say the others aren't worth the money.

Everyone will likely tell you the same thing. The Medela Hospital grade pump will be the best for you. You can buy cheeper versions, but they are not going to be nearly as effective. Maybe call your pharmacy and see if they will rent one for a month or so to see if you like it. Aslo, if you are in doubt call the lactation consultant at your local delevery center and see what they recomend.

Ameda Purely Yours http://www.medela.com/NewFiles/pumps_personalUseElectric.html#pumpinstyle_advancers (w/ carry all)

They both come with nice carrying totes, that look like a nice purse, the Ameda is a bit cheaper, but many will actually argue that its better for long term use because of the "closed system" that prevents milk from leaking and getting stuck into places you can't clean out... so for multiple children over the course of a few years, may be the better option.

My lactation consultant told me that the Medela Pump in Style is the best. It's hospital-grade, and still portable. It comes in a stylish carrying bag that just looks like a large purse.

I bought a double breast pump that could be used off of an outlet or off of batteries from Walmart. I am not sure what the brand name was but it was only about $80.00 with taxes.

Look both at your work, and if you're married, your husbands work to see if they have a "lactation program" This will often get you a significant - mine was 66% off, $300 downto $100, discount on a new pump.
