Ovulation occurs sometime between 10-16 days before your next period starts. Figure out how long your cycles typically are and when your next period is due. Count back 16 days from when your next period is due and start having intercourse every other day for a week or so. This should ensure that sperm are present when the egg is released.
It is a common misconception that every woman has a 28 day cycle and ovulates on day 14, this is rarely true.
As for when to check your CM, it doesn't really matter, just whatever is convenient for you. Just be sure that if you plan to have intercourse that you check before doing it. And be consistant about what time you check--I find first thing in the morning easiest for me, right before I shower.

The best time for intercourse is to start about 5 or 6 days or so before you ovulation day and have intercourse (every other day will do) until you are sure you ovulated. You won't get pregnant after ovulation occurs. Your egg only lives about 12 hours but sperm can live upto 3 days inside you. That is why you want to have the sperm already there before the egg is released. You should chart your temp and use opk's to help determine ovulation. Check for cm everyday and every time you go to the bathroom. It can change midday sometimes. The most fertile cm is when it looks and feels like raw egg whites. That usually is a good sign you will be ovulating soon. Read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and use the website fertilityfriend.com to help with charting. Good luck ttc and don't give up if it takes longer than expected!!!!

The best time for TTC is around you ovulation days which is normally 10-14days after the first day of you last menstrual period (LMP).
IE - got period on 1st august - ovulation between 10-14th august give a day or two. - next period due 2 weeks later.
Ovulation test kits are very good at telling you if you are at the ovulation stage of your cycle. You can buy them in multi packs as you may need to use them once a day for 3-4days until you get a positive reaction.

Good luck
