Space is not infinite. The Universe does have an end. Not an edge, because an edge is something you can fall off of, but the Universe does definitely have a point at which there is no farther you can go.

The universe is not infinite, and there is a very simple observation that helps prove that.

On the ground scale of things the Universe is homogeneous, that is, it is roughly the same on the large scale.

Therefore, if the universe was infinite, and because it is homogeneous, then the night sky wouldn't be dark at all! Every line of sight would intercept with the light from a star! If the universe is infinite, then by definition it has all the time for the light to reach Earth. If this was true, than the 'night' sky would be just as bright as during the day (well, brighter actually).

Think of it like your walking in the woods. Even in a relatively small forest, if you stand in the middle of it chances are every where you look a tree will block your line of sight. Now, are you claiming that all these forests are infinite also? Of course not!

There is your scientific answer.

Yes of course, otherwise sooner or later it would stop and thereafter there would be nothing not even dimension, this is an absurd concept.

I communicated with Dr Paul Marmet of the University of Ottawa in Canada who sadly died last year, he was a great supporter of the infinite Universe postulate. The Universe is also infinite in lifespan as well, take a look at APEIRON the Magazine of the University Of Ottawa.

Patrick T above refers to Olbers's paradox, this has been shown to be nonsense. It is nonsense because light rapidly loses strength as the photons have to cover a larger and larger expanding spherical surface area as they move away from each source. Light does not travel for an infinite distance and this disproves Olbers's paradox.

Skymaster above talks about space being curved, there are areas of space which are said to contain nothing not even light; it is not possible to curve nothing because by definition there is nothing to curve. Time is an abstract concept and something which is abstract also cannot be curved.

Yes space is infinite because space-time is curved (see Einteins General Relativity) if you keep travelling in what you consider to be s straight line you will end up where you started. There is no edge to space, no centre, no end and it will continue to accelerate its expansion forever,

All the galaxies in the unuverse are movimg away from each other (except those in the local group such as Andromeda) at an ever accelerating rate so we will be all alone eventually because the others have moved beyond the visible universe at a speed greater than light (not light but space expands)and so will be invisible to any observer here.

This expansion (first shown by Hubble after whom the telescope is named) is fueled by "Dark Energy" and has been confirmed by a number of different methods. This Dark Energy accounts for 78% of the univers's total mass/energy but no-one realy knows what causes it.

I could go on for an infinity, but thats enough for now, so my answer is yes.

Do a search on Dark Energy (not Dark Matter which is different) and see what you might get, or Hubbles discovery in 1929 when the expansion of the universe was first postulated. Dark Energy did not come along until1998.

I "believe" space is infinite because space is the absence of matter! Can you get to a point in the universe and see a wall (matter) at which you think, hmm space ends here? I seriously doubt it.

Infinity is not a weird concept. The number line we use in math goes to infinity on both the positive and negative sides! There is no such thing as the "largest number" at which point you can't count any further! Thus I reckon, space too must be infinite.

EDIT: The visible universe is "finite." Space-time is only curved when there is a presence of a massive object Sun, Earth, Moon etc...

this isnt about the universe. it is about space. of course space is infinite because objects can be infinitely large. yes, the universe has an end. this is a fact. but space, space is something different. if you dont think space is infinite. what lays beyond the "edge" of our universe? light doesnt travel fast enough for us to ever know, but it isnt nothing.

if you are born in a room with no windows or doors. and you spend your life in that room how could you not think that something lays beyond those walls. maybe a larger room, but there will be something on the other side of those walls. etc.

so, my final answer is that i do believe that space is infinite.

Space is infinite and i and demonstrate that mathematicly:

suppose it is not infinite

than there is a farthest point in the space from earth. this is proven by the theory of the biggest and smallest number in a group - no mather what nonzero group they always exist.

if such a point exists supose we go with a ship there.

if space is finite thatn the ship can go no further, but since there is nothing phisical to stop it it can go a bit further.

if u repeat this u will never find a point in which u can't go a bit foward.

thus the distance between easrth and the ship tends to infinite and thus space must be infinite.

some people confuse space with the known universe that is finite and enlarging since the big ben but it doesn't limit the size of space - that would be like saying that the amount of soup limits the size of the plate

NO. SPACE IS NOT INFINITE.

Anyone who says anything different knows nothing whatsoever about the subject.

Think about it. We know (because we can see) that the universe is continually expanding. Therefore, it is bigger today than it was yesterday. Therefore, it cannot ever be described as infinite.

Most people (not you obviously, since you're asking the question) haven't got the vaguest idea what infinity actually means. It doesn't just mean very, very big, it means NEVER ENDING.

The universe is NOT infinite. Never has been, never will be. But it is bloody huge.

I believe it is infinite.
How could something like space or the universe have an end?!
If there was an end what would be there then??????
I just also want to say if someone tried to go to the star furthest away,
They would most likely NEVER reach it, because once again SPACE IS INFINITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your question is one of belief then it depends on the respondents personal belief systems. You won't get an accurate answer to this question.

If it is a scientific question then remove the word "believe" and replace it with "think" or "happen to know if".

Generally, the concensus is that scientists currently think that the universe is finite. It is expanding, which means that you will never reach the "edge" because when you get there, it has expanded some more. Is that more like the question you wanted to ask? Can you reach the edge of the universe (as suggested by Douglas Adams)?
