we may be displaying signs of over-possessiveness, which could prove to be negative for the child in later years, when reaching the point of achieving its own autonomy and unnecessarily be a cause of our own suffering?

I think it also makes them feel that they only have worth as children. When so much emphasis is placed on the importance of the child, then when they grow to adulthood it appears they matter little in comparison.

Unconditional love and consistency are what kids want and crave. I'm not sure about over -possessiveness, we always tried to let each of our sons be who and what they are.... thye have ech made mistakes, as have we , and we have all learned from them

yes, i agree with u. Give the kids freedom to take decisons by themselves. they will learn by trial and error method. But be ready to give ur guidance when they need.
