In order to empathize, you must have had the experience yourself. Empathizing validates others feelings or outlook.
If you sucked at it, you wouldn't feel anything. Your question and statement have lots of feeling in them. Take heart!

It's really easy. Most people have the same emotions. Fear, anger, sadness, happiness etc, if you can just imagine which emotion you would feel in a certain situation, you will usually find that that is the same as another person would be feeling. Once you can stop and think about how something would make you feel, then you can feel that empathy for another person. You have to get to understand your own emotions and how they work first though.

I can and will, but that doesn't mean I will base anything I say to them or advice I may give them based just on that. To me, empathizing with them allows me to know where they are at, but that doesn't mean that is where they should be or that they should be encouraged to stay there.

I always try to empathize if the person has a legitimate concern.

Yes. That is my downfall when I get emotionally involved with a question. Some people ask questions that touch a nerve with people who actually lived trough what they thought was a joke. Death, disease and illness are not something to make fun of. Sorry. I'll shut up again.

Yes, but I usually over do it and end up feeling bad for the person.
