If you really want something hilly, go to Cameron Highlands. You will have to take a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Tapah then another bus from Tapah up to the Highlands. There are budget hotels in two popular highland towns, Tanah Rata and Brinchang the latter of which is higher up and thus cooler.

The ride from KL to Tanah Rata takes about 3 hours. Spend 2 nights in Camerons, that is enough. You can visit the Boh Tea plantation there, walk around strawberry and veg farms (although you have these in Canada too). This place used to be the hill station for holidaying British before independence, just like how the Americans loved Baguio in the Philippines. You can go hiking up hills as well - there are simple trails on Gunung Brinchang (Brinchang hill).

However if you think you really are short of time, I would say everything in Malaysia will be a unique experience for you - except for the high-rise buildings of the cities. In Penang, you have Penang Hill but Georgetown itself is not hilly.

Food-wise, hit the hawker stalls in Gurney Drive and all of it is different from what's in Canada. Yes you may get Malaysian dishes over there but the taste there differs because it is more catered for the Western tastebud.

If you like the hill, try going to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands. For a more secluded hills, try going to Frasers Hills or Maxwell Hill. These 2 hills are not as developed as the other two.
