As long as yahoo has serers in china, local law demands access to the data. This means that people who call out for more freedom on any of yahoo's sites can and will be put into jail.

Yahoo knows this and is aiding in china's reign of oppression and violation of basic human rights.

Should Yahoo move its data-servers out of reach of the china goverment?

And if Yahoo doesn't, should it be held responsible for any death resulting from the release of personal data?
Data can be encrypted or even destroyed, thus saving possible lives.

But what about international laws and rights?
Yahoo's head office is located in america.
Aiding with torture doesn't only violate american law, but also international laws for human rights.

It is quite funny actually. I live in China myself and base on the very fact that I can come to this site and answer this question shows that China is no the evil and opessive police state as you may think it is.

As a nomal Chinese, I do not feel any thing weird or being monitored or every seen any government secret agents fellowing me or anything. I have a collection of baned book right next to me about the Tiananmen Square event in 1989. If the goverment is really as opessive as you are trying to say shouldn't I be put into jail or dead by now?

I think that the western media have given an unfair portrayal of the Chinese people in the past century. Please come to China and see things for yourself. China is a safe country, you will be treated with respect and be welcome as our honored guest. Please come, you wont regret it.

What in the hell are you talking about?

I'm an ex pat from the USA here in China and damn-it, having Yahoo servers here makes my Yahooing that much faster.

Plus, this country does not have the totalitarian dictatorship that you think it has, nowhere near. Its a country that is slowly changing from a communist state to eventually a Democratic Republic system just like ours is in the USA - at their own pace, not the pace the instant gratifiers in the states want that has brought us two very screwed up wars and democracy in those countries that is trying to stand up straight like butter can on a hot bed of coals.

Peace

Jim

Yahoo, like any other business, has to follow the laws of the country where they operate.
