The people now referred to as Native Americans came across the Bering land bridge from Asia thousands of years before Leif Erickson or Christopher Columbus came from the east, spread out across the American Continents and were long in place by the time the next immigrants arrived.

The very first person given that honorary state was found during this last ice melt. Along an Alaskan plain, near the border of the Arctic circle, bones were found near what was described as scrub birch trees along an ice swept hill. They belong to a old woman though to be about mid age.
The put together story was that she came across with her family about 18 K years ago and couldn't make the final journey through illness and was left by the trees for shelter and comfort.

They probably followed their food on foot from Siberia or Eastern China and, she could go no further.

The first Europeans to establish a colony in what is now the US were the Spanish who settled St Augustin, FL.

Neither the Vikings (Canada) nor Columbus (Caribbean Basin) ever set foot on what is today the US.

Good question :) Did you know there is a similar village to the one known as Zimbabwe in New Jersey ? Who ever built those two has my vote on being the first immigrants
