I will have to agree with the first poster, where he said motivating your child is your job, not the TV's, but, as a young adult, a year older than your son, I know how distant we can be, and sometimes parents need a little help, so, yeah, I'll help :)
Two good movies, off the top of my head, are Stand and Deliver, and Lean on Me are very good movies, about dedication, and education. And they are very entertaining too.
Stand and Deliver, is probably more what you are looking for, as it's about inner-city Calculus students that are kind of dead-beats and cheaters, but their teacher convices them to be better than they expected they could be. It's also pretty funny at times, if i remember.
Lean on Me, is more of a broad version of Stand and Deliver, which focus on the school principal Samuel L Jackson, takes a school in the projects full of gangs and thugs, and turns it around into a safe place to learn, also a very good movie, and based on a true story.
There are other moives, that he might enjoy, a literal ton of football movies follow that sort of "come together and do your best" vibe, most recent, probably most up a 19 year old's ally is Gridiron Gang, which has The Rock (the wrestler) in it, as a coach at a juvie jail, and he manages to straigten the kids out to work together and get their lives together, though there is a bit of a sad violent twist at the end, it's a good message, and pretty entertaining, and, you know, you can smell what the rock is cooking. :D
There are more, of course, but those three, in that order, should give you some direction.
Good movies, with good messages, sure, but if the kid doesn't want to learn, the kid wont. Movies can't change that... but hey, they could be nice bonding tools if you watch with him, as a father/son thing.
I hope it helps though, and be sure to check the links in my sources for more information on the movies!

I do agree with everyone who says that you should be the one to motivate your son and not movies. But I also know that when I was 19 (only a few years ago). I didn't care what my mom told me, what I did was the right thing. Lucky for her I was pretty much a good kid :)
About a month ago I watched "The Pursuit of Happyness" staring Will Smith. After seeing how this man went from nothing to everything and he worked his butt of for it. It made me want to get up and do something with my life. And I have a great life, married, living overseas, own my own home daycare, and I'm only 22. But this movie made me want to go back to school and learn something new. And as soon as we movie back to the states in a few years I plan on doing just that. It really is a good movie that will make you and your son think. Please watch it togeather! Also, its a true story.
Also, "Step Up" was a good movie. But its about dance so not sure if you can get him to watch it. It's about a guy who get into trouble and is forced to work at this school of arts. He ends up joining the school because he is so inspired. It's really good!

The South Park episode, "My Future Self n' Me" :^)
But other than that, I don't know about movies to teach to study or work hard, but a great motivational movie is Pay It Forward.

Waiting was a good motivational movie for my 19-year-old son-- it showed him what life could be like without an education.
It also taught him not to be rude to the wait staff in restaurants.

Coach Carter. Movie is based on sport of basketball involving high school students. they had to get good grades before the coach even let them play another game. They loved the game of course.
Drumline - the boy in the movie knew how to play drums really well and liked to go solo sometimes but didn't know how to read music. he had to learn how to read music to be able to play with the band.

One good movie is a Matt Damon movie: Good Will Hunting: Part of the story was about how this genius was wasting his life as a janitor at a local university.
That's all I can think of...sorry.

Against the ropes is a good film. I found it motivational. Not to do with books or anything but one of those get going, you can do better films
"She goes to visit the fighter at home, only to find him addicted to drugs. Enter Luther Shaw, a small time hood. Kallen watches in mixed horror and fascination as Shaw pummels the former middleweight champ. She offers to manage him professionally. Although Shaw is at first hesitant, he eventually signs on with Kallen. Because of LaRocca, Kallen can't find Shaw a fight anywhere in Ohio, so the two are forced to go on the road until Shaw makes a name for himself. However, Jackie begins to get swept up in all the attention she gets for being the first female boxing promoter. Her attention eventually shifts from Shaw to her own media persona as Shaw's number of wins continues to climb. Finally realizing that she is not paying enough attention to her only client, Kallen agrees to sell Shaw's contract to LaRocca on the condition that he be given a championship fight. LaRocca agrees, setting Shaw up for a shot at the title before he could possibly be ready. Kallen arrives at the fight and stands in Shaw's corner as he goes on to win the title."

It doesn't come from books or movies. It comes from setting an example, parental discipline, teaching him the difference between right and wrong, and getting him involved in his own life by age 10.
