Well, the only time that happens is when you don't wear shoes that much and walk around on barefeet The skin on the bottom of your feet then becomes thick. Just like when you play guitar alot, the skin on the tips of the fingers get thicker to cushion your fingers I guess when pressing the strings down. Thats why it doesn't hurt as much as you continue playing the guitar. Hope this answers your question.

Tough yes, hard no. It's a leathery toughness, but if the skin were hard it'd crack. I go barefoot everywhere but probably because of that it wears down enough too so it doesn't get so thick and hard that cracks can form.

Mine are only a little bit tough and not very hard. While I wish they were tougher, I also want them to remain soft.

Yes because I never wear shoe's I only wear them when I go out some wear. I hate shoes if I had my way I would never wear them.
