From an evolutionary perspective, 'we' refers to all form of life on the planet. Some organisms survive longer then others, but most if not all, have gone extinct either by natural selection and/or natural disaster. Homo sapiens as an evolutionary species are a very young lifeform. It would seem therefore that our evolutionary purpose is to reproduce and survive, same as all the others plants and animals.
Some argue that what distinguishes humans from other lifeforms is our ability for rational conscious abstract thought. A by-product of this being philosophy where we question the meaning of our existence.
Thus, from a humanistic perspective, it would seem that our purpose is subjective and depends on an individual's own belief system, which is likely to influence such rational thought processes for that individual. So for example, for an individual having a religious belief system, their purpose in life is likely to be defined by the qualities aspired to by such a belief system. This would seem to hold for non-religious belief systems too, i.e. those qualities that each individual values highest.
Personally, i believe the purpose is to enjoy oneself to the fullet without hurting those around you. We are on the planet for a miniscule moment in time and should try and make the most of it.

Yes. Your question requires a God. No one but God could put us on earth and give us a mission (or purpose) to be here.
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell
From that, I know that no one can create their own purpose for life unless they claim to have created themselves. So answers such as this from Dram Dio are nonsense: "maybe you could say it is your purpose to choose what you want to do with your life".
From Bertrand Russell's statement, I also know that evolution cannot give us purpose. Evolution is a natural, mindless process and by itself can no more give us purpose than the ocean can give purpose to a wave.
And the logic from answerer #7 is really weird. He essentially says that if God exists, tell Him to go do whatever it is He wants done while we go and do what we want to do.
I think there are only two choices. Seek God (and therefore real purpose) or seek something to do that will make us forget the terrible pointlessness of a life without purpose.

My depressing main purpose it would seem would be to check my students spellings!! Each piece of work I take in, I know that there will be a minimum of 6 errors per student, sometimes the number rises to double figures. Why is it that very few people can spell correctly and have no idea that a word is spelt incorrectly? I do explain on a one to one but no one is interested - leaving all to the computer

Well let me see?!, If you are a strong believer in yourself and Fate ( yes that word ) then my answer is yes, we are all here to serve a purpose, but your goal is to find out what inspires you and what you strongly believe in. I found that I had to get to know myself before I could possible know what I wanted to do that is the most important aspect in knowing what your soul purpose is. I know this sounds deep, but honestly there's lots of undiscovered waiting to be discovered, you will know when you have found what it is your purpose is. Remember stand strong unite with others and don't be afraid to stand up for what you KNOW is right Good luck!!

I don't think there's just one main purpose, you can do a lot of things in life, maybe you could say it is your purpose to choose what you want to do with your life

No we weren't...
We "was" put on earth because our parents had a purpose 3/4 of a year before we were born.

We do have a purpose, it's just not handed to us like a birth certificate, it is the premise for the journey of each of our lives, to find the meaning, and fulfil that destiny. People tend to get frustrated at things that take work, and when answers are not easy to come by. We get lazy and want everything handed to us.

I don't think it is for us to bother about that. If Someone did put us on earth, He should be powerful enough to ensure we serve the intended purpose, whether knowingly or willingly or otherwise. We can safely concentrate on whatever purpose we intend in our lives.
