Does Chewbacca have human intelligence or is he just a really whiny pet?

Seriously, all he ever does is complain. He acts like he knows how to fix computers, but all we see him do is whine.

He didn't much more whining than Han Solo, I thought, and I would assume his intelligence is that of a human since he is the co-pilot and fix-it guy.
