I just bought my first pair of tap shoes for a beginning tap class. They are leather Bloch "Mary Jane" shoes with techno taps. What are some do's and don'ts for tap shoe maintenance? What about practising as I don't have a decent floor to really practice on? Would practising some of the steps be okay just wearing socks on some carpet (to prevent slipping on my hardwood floor)?

Thanks! I'm excited about taking the class!

awww! i think its adorable youre so excited! yay! tap really is fun and great exercise! ok,im done being retarded lol.
i just want to ask, are you sure they're bloch and not capezio mary janes? black or tan with flowers inside? came with little bows in the box? if so, please just be aware that eventually the screws come loose and the tap may fall off. easily repairable, just a caveat. that said, a good rule to adhere to with dancing is to let your shoes dry after class. it prevents stinkyness, put also helps to prolong the life of the shoe- more obvious in pointe shoes, but applicable to any style- and the big rule? LET THEM GET CRUMMY! Its a right of dancer passage to have a beat to hell pair of shoes that are so broken in they're like bedroom slippers that you refuse to get rid of! ans yed, its fine to practice in socks...especially in front of the sink doing dishes, makes the time fly by!

good luck with your class!

Never wear them outside! That's a major don't. Also don't use them on the hardwood floor because like you already said you would slip, but also because you would completely chip up your floor. To practice you don't neccesarily have to wear your tap shoes. Practicing in your or just bare feet is always an option. The shoes don't make a dancer, the dancer makes the shoes.

Also don't try to wash your shoes in a washer, because with the metal bottoms you can't put them in a dryer and they have to air dry.

Have fun in your class! And good luck!

Thats exciting..Deffinetly Dont walk outside/on concrete and you should be fine..practicing the steps on carpet or where ever is fine without taps on..even bare foot on your wood floors..the best way to practice is with the taps on because of hearing the sounds they would make that you wouldnt get by not wearing them...but it is hard to find a place to practice..i had gotton a ideal size of woodfloor (pre-cut) to practice on at home because taps deffinetly could ruin the regular flooring and my parents wouldnt like that lol

I was always taught the more scratched and worn in the shoes and taps are the better they sound. So at my dance studio its not uncommon to see girls scuffing their new taps by walking in them on the concrete or hitting them against each other. I practice in my garage (because we don't have a basement) and they're fine even though the beats and sounds come out kinda funny. Good Luck with you class!

properly first of all large decision for Capezio. they're an somewhat solid company and you would be very pleased with them. 2d for extra help in a faucet shoe you're able to desire to a pair which you will tie. The slip on shoes for they could enable your foot be somewhat lose even though it is no longer a stable shoe. Thirdly it incredibly is incredibly helpful to get a pair of faucet shoes that has a intense heel for they're extra used for character shoes. So attempt to get a flater shoe. finally the colour. there is black or tan. while you're dancing by skill of your self it could no longer likely rely what colour you get yet once you're dancing with anybody else than locate out what colour they're donning after which you're able to desire to have your colour shoe which you will need. Hopes this facilitates and solid success looking a shoe.

Well my dance teacher always told us to scuff the tap shoes on the concrete to get a better sound off them. It also helps with the sliding around the floor.
