K, first thing's first: do not panic.

It's gonna be hard to figure out how it got in the house. Snakes can squeeze into unimaginably tiny spaces. My ball python has amazed me at some of the spaces he's managed to squeeze into.

If you're this skittish of the snake (and if you live in an area with lots of poisonous snakes) I say it's time to call in an expert to get rid of it. If you want to find it, here's an idea: Put something on the floor like a partially opened shoe box. Get a small lamp that produces a fair amount of heat hovering over the box. This gives the snake both a heat source (they're cold blooded) and a hiding place. turn all other lights in the room off and avoid going in there for the night. If you've barred it off in that one room, it should find the box rather quickly. If you use something like a shoe box, then you might be able to just push the lid on and take the snake outside. ^^

An important thing to remember with all snakes: Unless dodging a strike, NEVER make quick movements, as they perceive these as threats. Move nice and slow. If you want to sneak up on the snake to shut the lid of the box, use soft footsteps (they don't hear but they do sense vibrations very well)

If this sounds like too much for you, just call an expert in to catch it. ^^ Then call someone in to find out how it got in your house.

Good luck!

I have a wide knowledge of snakes and guesing that your based in england I am pretty sure it was a Garter snake. Browny, greenish sort of snake that is harmless. There is NO NEED to call animal control, you can hold it and remove it from the house. Show it your flat hand so that it knows you haven't got any food, approach it slowly and carefully. Pick it up from the MIDDLE of it's body only. Don't be scared, it won't harm anyone. I live in france so I've handled wild snakes (vipers), lizards and frogs. I'm 13 so I'm quite chuffed!

1st off, get your kids and yourself out of the house. 2nd, call animal control RIGHT AWAY. If it is after hours and no one answers animal control (depending on where you live) call the police and have them get someone over there. 3rd, I would call the landlord and have the place inspected asap to find out how it got in and make sure it doesn't happen again. If you own your home you will have to call a home inspector yourself. Good luck and be safe. There are plenty of non-poisonous snakes out there but many more that look harmless and are extremely dangerous. Be careful.

call animal control. they will come deal with it. shut off the room it is in and stuff something under the crack in the door to keep the snake in there and keep your kids away from the room.

Depending on what type of snake it is it may not hurt you. But with every unknown animal you should call animal control and have them remove it.

call the spca, animal control, game warden or pest removal service. do not call the police for that. they have more important things to deal with.
they come thru very small openings. more than likely if you leave it alone it will leave.
if it wasn't very large i would leave it alone- you might have mice that it's removing for you free of charge lol
