Any store has to charge a sales tax based on state law. This is not an option for them and has nothing to do with the actual price of the item. Therefore, the price may be a dollar, but the total will always be more, depending on the tax rate rate. The "dollar" is the price, not the total cost.

They REALLY want to sell you stuff for a dollar.
You REALLY want to buy stuff for a dollar.
For some reason that's probably unconstitutional, the storeowning company has been made an unpaid tax collector.
It's the government's fault.

Same deal with paychecks: The company made a deal to pay you X, and that's what you expect, but the govt steps in and says you will NOT get X, you will have that reduced by this "gift" called withholding. Ain't America's govt great?

The items might cost a dollar, but the state levys taxes on that dollar so it really costs about a buck o'seven.

ROFL...... they ought to change the name to "The 93 cents plus tax" store LOL........ to keep it under a buck, OR "The Dollar plus tax store" ($1.00 + tax) lol..... that's seemingly more appropriate...... lol

*sighs* poor uncle sam.... has to earn a living off taxing LOL.
*thinks* though..... at 6 or 7 cents on a dollar depending where you live, it's more like he's getting royalties then taxes LOL..... but then, every dollar counts!

Just consider the grotesque and obnoxious expense accounts of city officials nationwide, each citizen's way of saying "thanks for making our cities so crappy mr mayor!" LOL that ought to make it easier to fork over the extra 7cents at the dollar store! lol, and just think........ because of your contributions..... your mayor drives a Lexus and there's been no citywide change in funding for education or providing jobs or health-care, or a decrease in the crime rate concerning local citizens.... with everything that 7 cents went towards. I think that's a tremendous accomplishment! LOL .... just tell him he looks pretty in his car... then he wont cry so hard when they haul him off to prison LOL .......
*sighs*...... i fear i'm starting on the WRONG subject.... this is P&S! rofl..........

It's the state that does the taxing, not the store.
