Despite Victory in World War Two Americans became fearful that their country was in imminent danger of being taken over by Communist. These fears were encouraged by unscrupulous politicians (yes, an oxymoron) among them was Senator Joseph McCarthy of Minnesota, born in 1908, having served without distinction in the US Marines, he rode a wave of misplaced enthusiasm for war veterans to win election in 1946 over a truly great Progressive named Robert LaFollette Jr. Prior to World War Two "The Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was originally established in 1937 under the chairmanship of Martin Dies. The main objective of the HUAC was the investigation of un-American and subversive activities." HUAC's chief attack was aginst the American movie industry, lashing out against actors writer directors accusing them of trying to subvert American values. McCartney seized upon the hysteria generated by the HUAC hearings of 1947 to set himself up as an ardent foe of Communist giving his first public speech against Communism in 1950, insisting "I have in my hand a list of 205 cases of individuals who appear to be either card-carrying members or certainly loyal to the Communist Party."
These imaginary lists became a potent weapon in McCartney's arsenal as he became a media star, railing against evil communists insisting they were everywhere and could be anyone, he found it easy to target celebrities, organizing the second wave of HUAC hearings in 1951 and riding a wave of favorable publicity for his activities in 1952
After reelection the media began turning against McCartney, and in 1954 Journalist/Newscaster Edward R Murrow was able to expose McCartney's actics, "After a confrontation with Secretary of the Army, Robert Stevens, McCarthy soon afterward convenes the Army-McCarthy hearings to investigate communism in the Army. With the help of President Eisenhower and Edward Murrow's unedited footage of the hearings, the Army is vindicated and the true nature of McCarthyism is becomes evident to the American public." Discraced, censured by the Senate, McCartney crawled into a liquor bottle and died of cirrochis of the liver in 1957. HUAC contnued investigate Communists and other 'Enemies of America' through the 1960's. "In 1969, HUAC was renamed the Internal Security Committee. Six years later it was abolished and its functions transferred to the House Judiciary Committee. " The Red Scare was simply a means for America to punnish a variety of people for mostly imaginary crimes for the purpose of keeping American's aware that there loyalties should never waiver from the two established political parties and that despite the Ammendment for Free Speech, speech deemed subversive could be costly.

Hope that helps!! Peace

Here is a tidbit for you to use:

"Joseph McCarthy was one paranoid, anti-American, constitution hating son of a ***** who systematically 8-balled thousands of artists, musicians, free thinkers and others who did not fit his delusional mold of what an American should be."

How is that?

Can't be done. It covers a period of U.S. history from 1919 to 1956.
