Q-tips, tampons, sani-pads, big wads of toilet paper (or paper towels, paper napkins), bars of soap, kids' toys, etc. Or a clog further downstream, like roots growing into the sewer drainpipe, a collapsed drainline, a clogged vent (squirrels or rats, usually). Start with a plunger and some hot water in the toilet bowl. Do NOT use Drano, etc. Next, if those don't work, buy or rent a 'closet auger' to snake the toilet. After that, a LICENSED plumber, unless you're really handy and own a pair of rubber gloves Also, check to see how much water is in the toilet's water tank BEFORE you flush, then, with the tank lid off, flush the toilet and see how much water leaves the tank: you might have to adjust the water level higher and/or tighten the chain on the flapper. P.S.: a plunger works by trapping air above the water, inside the 'bell' of the plunger; when you vigorously push down on the plunger, the air pushes the water, forcing the clog out...IF it's "force-out-able." But it doesn't work in all of the above instances, hence the suggested alternatives

You can get a clogged toilet from teh following reasons:
1. flushing tampon plastic applicators or pads
2. too much toilet paper
3. septic tank is overflowing
4. too much matter in the bowl of the toilet
5. accidentally flushing makeup, money, jewelry, plastic caps, etc.
Basically it is anything that clogs the flow of water so that it cannot refresh itself. A plunger will get rid of this problem. Keep pushing down until it goes down. A plunger basically pulls things upward so that the water has a chance to flow properly.

Attempted flushing of one or more objects of such a length and/or girth as to be incapible of being accomidated by the fixture, resulting in impaction of said object(s) at some point within the drainage channel and leading to partial, or complete, blockage of effluent flow. In certain cases, this condition can reach the danger threshold, and if immediate action is not taken, results in massive overfilling of the bowl and catastrophic loss of containment of septic material.
Space and time limitations preclude me from giving an exhaustive and comprensive listing of all offending objects and substances which have been observed and documented. The ambitious reader is strongly ecouraged to review the extensive literature on this subject.

if u have a kid, they prolly flushed a pencil or something that shouldnt have been flushed....or the other possibility (which is kinda gross) is that somebody took a dump, and they pooped a lot, and then to make it even worse, they used way way too much toilet paper and tried to flush it all at once.
(Whenever that happens to me, I flush twice so there's never any clogs)

Well, Not everyone goes 'Pooh' everyday.
Some people go Pooh once every 2 to 3 days.
And when they go........they can *Clog Up* the Toilet, having 3 days worth of digested food in them.

you have really big poop, you use way too much toilet paper, you flush things down that should be flushed, Your water pressure the sends the water down to clear the bowl is weak? You could also have a water saving toilet...it isnt powerful enough to flush anything but small poo and urine...
