What up young-one. i think it's always good to practice keeping the defender in front of you. Too many people these days go for the steal and get killed by a crossover or spin move.
Practice denying the ball. And trying to get the offensive player to catch the ball a little farther from the hoop than they like. Remember good defense is making the offensive player take a hard shot- or a shot they don't want to take. Some people will make really hard shots even when you play good defense.
Watch good defenders and see also if you can pick up habits from them.
i think also if you attend a basketball camp you can learn good footwork for defense which matters.
Hope that helps.

Practice makes perfect. Time on the court always helps. Also, you could try staying in a defensive position for like 2 minutes, then increase to about 5 minutes straight, and you could imagine you are guarding a man, and just try that...

Challenge yourself by guarding the top player on your team, and you improve your off-ball defense and your opponent can't get the ball then you don't got to worry about man to man.

do some drills for your footwork. defense is played with your feet. also, see your man and the ball. know where both are and are going at all times.

Cover him like a blanket. Denie him the ball. rarely look at where the ball is and watch for picks.
