In 5 years, the mideast will contain a lot of sand. That part is certain. The rest is up for grabs.

Israel will try to make friends with some of its neighbors, but groups within Israel and those countries will try their hardest to prevent it. Remember that there are both Arabs and Jews who strongly believe that Israel should not exist.

Iran will probably end up controlling a good portion of Iraq, either directly or indirectly. The Imams in Iran will gain some more strength and push sharia law.

There may be a successful genocide event in Iraq, where either the Shiite or Sunni's manage to overtake and eliminate the others in some areas.

There will be a rise in militias run by clerics again in Iraq. It may spill over to elsewhere. The Iraqi government will have to deal with these promptly. Some will be funded and armed by elements of the Iraqi government, and will also be antigovernment. Some will be funded and aremed by Iran. There are many jealous eyes around Iraq. Expect some quiet land grabs when no one is looking.

Iran will develop a nuclear weapon. The revolutionary guards will want to have it to use against their enemies. They may be successful.

There will be a backlash against fundamentalism and militant religious groups. The government may or may not be strong enough to capitalize on that to get rid of them.

Some of the militant groups will also get support by putting up hospitals, schools, and such. The schools will be quite ferverent in their indoctrination. As these groups get stronger, they will find no one to fight in their own community and start to prey on others.

It will be quite the mess. Then again it always has been.

Here's what will happen, to the great disappointment of all the warmongers among us: Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki will be forced to step down and he will be replaced by Yalawi. Prime Minister of Kuridistan Barzani will agree to share oil revenues with the Shia and Sunny in order to escape total annihilation by the most ferocious army on earth, the Turks. Kudistan will petition for independent region status as provided in the Iraqi constitution. That same constitution declares, in article one, that Iraq is to be a federal republic, not a central authority. The Sunny and Shia will set up their own regions within Iraq and live according to their own religious laws. The federal government in Baghdad will provide for common defense of the borders, settle disputes between the regions, and ensure that oil revenues are shared per agreement. Iraq will be a democracy under Islamic law. Having rebuffed Russia's attempts to strengthen its alliance with Iran, Iranians will get rid of their pro-Russian President (who they don't like) and replace him with someone better able to bring Iran in to the modern world. Israel will grant independant status to Palestinians and a new nation will be born called Palestine. The Gaza strip and all of Jerusalem will remain under Israeli governance. Egypt will partner with Isreal on creating a new Middle-East Economic Union to be joined by every Arab nation in the region. The focus of this MEU will be attracting investment and building new industries so that the Middle East will no longer be dependant on ever-shrinking oil revenues in a world that has taken seriously the dangers of global warming due to fossil fuels. The entire region will be the world's second-leading economic power (behind only the U.S.A) and the first in the world to generate all power using both nuclear and solar energy.

And the United States will still be trying to figure out how to pay off a 9-trillion-dollar national debt.

Five yr prediction
Iraq will fall into chaos
Iran will want to control it, but will fail and maybe make a land grab for East Iraq
Iran and Israel will have a major conflict
America will stay out of Israel, but may provide tertiary support

Think in the Arab mindset, they don't forget, many still hold a vendetta in Iran over the US involvement with Iranian politics in the 80's, they will not forget Iraq.

If we stay the course, I think things will wind down in Iraq.

Now, could be that some western alliance blows up Iran's nuclear plants, since Iran simply will not comply. That may cause some problems.

Israel and Palestine may continue their violence for another 20 or 30 years.

Things will be worse from the status quo. What is the status quo you ask? Well in a recent poll of foreign policy experts (nonpartisan) 91% of them say we are losing the war on terror. Yes, I did say things will go down hill from there.

I think islamic revolution will sweep out of iran like a category 7 hurricane...fueled by anti american anti west anger for meddling in arab muslim affairs .....imperialism, and colonialist mentality harkening back to the days when the shah of iran was installed to replace the duly democratically elected government of Iran. history it seems repeats itself.
