Fractions are merely part of a whole number. They consist of a numerator/denominator (aka 2/5, 3/16). When adding and/or subtracting them, reduce them down to the lowest common denominator , add the top numbers, put the total over the denominator to become your fraction, and reduce further if you can , or change an improper fraction to a whole number and fraction (14/10 = 1 4/10 or reduced further to 1 2/5).
Multiplying fractions= example 3/5 times 5/6 would equal 1/2 after you cancel out like numbers or reduce them. (5 goes into 5 once; 3 goes into 6 twice).
Dividing fractions=same example: 3/5 divided by 5/6. For the second step, you REVERSE the 5/6 to become 6/5, so you can MULTIPLY. 3/5 times 6/5. This results in 3*6=18/5 (an improper fraction. Reduce it by dividing 5 into 18=3, leaving 3/5. So 3/5 divided by 5/6= 3/5 times 6/5= 3 times 6=18 over 5 or 18/5, reduced to become 3 3/5 because in your answer 3 times 5 plus 3=18.
If my explanation hasn't driven you totally nuts, go to www.mathisfun.com/fractions-menu.html. They give you every type of math on that website, but this section is for fractions only. :)

What are you trying to do?

If you need to remember what fractions are think of a Pizza - a whole uncut pizza is 1/1, then you can cut it into two pieces and each person will have 1/2, or three pieces so each person gets 1/3, etc.

If you are trying to add or subtract, just add or subtract topnumbers, bottom stays the same. (3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8 or 5/8 - 2/8 = 3/8)

If you are going to multiply, both top and bottom numbers change as you multiply top with top and bottom with bottom. (3/4 x 6/8 = 18/32)

If you are going to divide, you need to take the reciprocal (sp?) by flipping over the numbers on the second fraction and then multiplying. (1/5 / 3/4 = 1/5 x 4/3 = 4/15)

To reduce use greatest common factor.

well adding and subtracting you must find a common donominator for instants the bottom number must be the same so you multiply the bottom and the top number by the same number to make the lower numbers match you may have to do this with both fractions then add or subtract the top numbers and if you have an improper fraction which means the top number is bigger than the bottom number or equal then you divide the top number by the lower number and put your number next to the fraction and the rest goes where the original top number was then the bottom number in the fraction stays the same. multiplying and dividing fractions is easy you multiply them by multiplying the top numbers and thats the top number of your fraction then you multiply the bottom numbers and thats the bottom of your fraction. dividing you just flip the second fraction over then multiply the fractions.

1) add/subtract (2/3) + (5/9) . u need common denominator. so multiply 3 by 3 to get 9.. and wat you do to the bottom you do to the top, so you also multiply 2 by 3. you get (6/9) + (5/9). now add the tops you get (11/9) which is your answer.

2) multiply. the way you normally would multiply, (2/3) x (5/9) gets u (10/27) your answer.

3) divide. (2/3)/ (5/9) you switch the second fraction around and multiply the 2. so it becomes (2/3) x (9/5) . your answer is (18/15)
