Good question.

Islam does not specify a method of choosing the head of state, and many predominantly Muslim countries are not really ready for democracy, or don't recognize it as preferable. In a country where there's a low crime rate, plenty of money, and Muslims are free to practice their religion openly, there's little reason for people to want a different form of government.

There's a hadith that illustrates this.
Heraclius, the Roman emperor, sent an envoy to Umar bin Al-Khattab, the second khalifa (leader) of the Muslims. The envoy wandered around Madina looking for Umar, and then asked somebody where to find him. The local asked in surprise if he hadn't seen Umar in the town square. The envoy said the only person he'd seen in the town square was an old man asleep in the dust under a tree. The local said that that was Umar.
The envoy found looked down at Umar, in simple, used clothes, his head pillowed on his sandals, and said, "Sleep peacefully, O Umar," remarking that Umar (may Allah grant him peace) was able to sleep without fear because he was fair to those he ruled and his country was at peace.

Some do. The Iranian Revolution was a huge step toward democracy compared to living under the Shah.

Iraq cannot exist as a democracy because its boundaries were artificially imposed by external imperialist power (The UK) and combines populations that have been violently warring with each other for hundreds of years. The only way Iraq can survive as a democracy is to split it into three parts: Shia (south), Sunni (central), and Kurd (north).

No why should they? Dubai has never had an election and they have divorce, the women are liberated, and the standard of living is pretty damn good. Democracy isn't god's gift to mankind.

To each his own. Besides, "democracy" is a very slippery subject and means different things to different people. The Swiss idea and the British idea and the Indian idea isn't the American idea for instance.

I don't think being Muslim has anything to do with it, these are just people at the end of the day , if they have been used to the same political system for years, then its difficult to change and most people don't like change, Muslim or not, even if they have been treated badly, they will probably resist it, but will eventually realise the benefit and freedom it will give them, but this can not be achieved over night, it has to be introduced slowly or they will just go crazy like the Russians did after Yeltsin suddenly anounced the end of Communisam, you just can't bring about a sudden change like that, people have to be educated.
