Lori: Revisionism and straw man analogies have never been productive. The Vietnamese conflict was a farce from the very beginning. Have you even heard of the Pentagon Papers?
or read McNamara's own mea culpa's
we never belonged there and our leaving staunched a bleeding that we started and perpetuated for profit and the people of Vietnam have finally shaken off the effects of over one hundred years of colonial exploitation and occupation. We perpetuated that disgusting state of affairs by 20 years for no good reason and killed yet another generation FOR NOTHING BUT MONEY!! That basturd bush DARES to say we should have STAYED!! unbelievable.. as are people who are defending him

Both wars were started for hidden agendas. The public was brought on side with propaganda and the result was a civil war that will go on for years afterwards to help cover up the true reasons for us being there.

Well we lost the Vietnam War and for a time instability and mass death reigned. Many refugees came to America after the War and their descendants who are great Americans are as assimilated as the rest of us.

I think there are more differences than similarities. The throw aways of our society populated the ranks of Vietnam soldiers. These were the men who could not do what most young men could back then and get a draft deferment. Sometimes they enlisted for training that was readily available in the civilian world. They were not well thought of by the civilian world and often only welcome in the downtown areas of a city. My grandfather who was a Vietnam Veteran and a draftee told me that soldiers were little respected and often ignored.

Today our soldiers are well respected and welcome in every community in America. These men and women come from families that taught them to obey rules, do your homework, and listen to your teachers. As a result they are the creme of america's crop. The future teachers, politicians, police officers, and leaders of America will come from these intrepid young people.

The enemy in Vietnam wanted to form an independent country free of European and American influence. They practiced Communism and yes did subscribe to the idea that Communism should prevail worldwide but really only wanted their own dictatorship of the Proletariat. The forces of Islamic Fundamentalism that is sweeping the Middle East has designs not just on Iraq but the entire world. They want to impose their barbaric practices of Sharia Law on the entire world. They want to oppress women in a male dominated society run by the most backward practicioners of Islam. That is the main difference between the two wars. In this war we are fighting to keep a backwards culture and religion from dominating the world.

The huge political pressure to abandon a country that is ripe for pogrom and assassination? The bloodshed that our withdrawal caused in Cambodia should make everyone who contributed to it hang their heads in shame. I'd hate to see more "killing fields". The Khmer Rouge and these terrorists have more than a few similarities.
