Depending on what you want done, educate yourself about the jurisdiction of your issue.

Some things are strictly state, some are federal. Other issues may be designated to the city level, depending on the state's constitution.

So make sure you are barking up the right tree and not wasting both yours and your politican's time.

Hi Mikaela. As an individual the political system will not respond to you (other than with the noted form letter). To have power in the political system you need numbers - lots of people on your side.

So, to make a change in the law you need to start a grass-roots movement. Get two other people to help you. Get them to each get two more people. And so on, and so on and so on. When the politicians receive letters from thousands of people on an issue, they wake up and pay attention. You need to build an organization of those thousands if you want to effect change.

Because only the special interest people vote (doctors, lawyers, CEO's & indian chiefs) your represenative will pay no attention to you whatsoever. First, you will never talk to him (or her) on a personal basis, you will talk to an employee in his office. They will decide if the rep will actually get you message. Your letter will not be read by him(or her) only an office employee. Once again they will decide if the rep receives it. On an individual basis you don't stand a chance in hell. As Doctor J wrote, get more people involved. If enough people inquire to the same problem the rep will respond. ONLY because he fears losing his seat in congress. If he does that he will have to work for a living like the rest of us. No wait, I forgot, If they are a member of congress they are already wealthy, don't have to work!
