I am 14 years old and I want to play electric guitar. I'm looking to buy an inexpensive beginner guitar. I found this deal, which is a beginner guitar, and an entire kit. http://www.wwbw.com/Squier-Fat-Strat-Solid-Body-Electric--(Closeout)-i232688.music
Is this a good deal? I have enough money to buy it, but does the guitar sound good to you? What about the amp?

as a guitar player and professional musician, I think you should get it. Strats are a nice beginner guitar, and you could expect to pay that much for the guitar alone, so you should go for it. Once you get better, you can always get a better guitar and amp, that's half the fun of playing anyways. My first guitar was similar, they're good because the string tension is usually lower which makes them easier to play especially when you're first starting. good luck!

Here's the deal. You have to buy a guitar that feels comfortable in your hands. If the neck is too wide or the fret spacing is too far apart then you are going to have difficulty in playing. Go to a local discount music store and try out a few different guitars to see how they feel.

The other thing is that you usually have to invest a fair amount of money to get even a good electric guitar to sound the way that you want it to sound through an amplifier because most of the professionals have custom effects to get their sound. You can buy an inexpensive effects box that has a headphone jack and you will be able to hear what you are playing in a more concert like sound than you can from a cheap amp even if you have a place where you can crank it up.

If you are just learning how to play guitar and you get a guitar that doesn't feel right and the sound isn't like you were expecting then most likely your guitar will end up in the closet until you give it away or sell it.

Do you have someone to give you lessons? Do you have a strong enough desire to learn how to play that you can sit down and practice for quite a while day after day while you slowly get better?

I started playing guitar three years ago and my first beginner electric guitar was a Squier Stratocaster for $200 (only the guitar). I found that it was a good beginner guitar for regular tunings. However if you're into drop D or C# or whatever tunings, it will not hold up. (It depends what kind of music you want to play.)I assume the same would apply to the Fat-Strat pack you are interested in.

I've tried a different Squier guitar and found that it wasn't as good as the Stratocaster I had. It wasn't the fat-strat though. I'd recommend a Squier Stratocaster, but for the Fat-strat pack, it's just a matter if you want to pay that $79 more for the amp and other things that come with it. Nonetheless, it's a decent price for what you'll get.

Good luck and I hope you'll enjoy playing guitar enough to continue for years to come.

Squires are VERY good beginner guitars but if you are thinking about doing this throughout college, you might want to go to a full out Fender. Squires, as you probably know, are the low end of Fender...the knobs break off slightly easier than Fenders and the neck warps a little more often, but if you take excellent care of it then it should be good! I'm a bass guitar player (don't worry, everything still applies...there are Squire basses as well) and so amps really matter to bass players because the low sounds don't travel as easy as a guitar's high sounds, but guitar players don't really need a high wattage amp....just yet.
End nut is: You should be fine!

Stephi- didnt go to squier-strat site but did get my son that
begginer kit when he was 14. He's 20 now, played in several
bands, also bought a real (fender) strat, gave him my 67 fender Jaguar, bought another electric and a Washburn acoustic. He changed a few things on that squier though and almost always plays it at the shows. Go for it girl! Can see him playin it at his 16th b-day party on m-space/4icepick

I'd get one of those value packs. Comes with a guitar, amp, video, chord chart(SOME), and pretty much everything else you need. Strat copies are really good starter electrics. As for amps Line 6 makes the best. The Spider line is really great.

If you are a beginner, a beginner's set with amp and cord is your best bet. That's how I started, that's how a lot of people started.
You want to start with a cheap guitar like one in a beginner's set and upgrade after a few years.

My hubby just bought the same thing, but a "Dean Guitar" (same exact set up - different guitar) for $189 at Guitar Showcase. I guess keep looking.

The website is www.deanguitars.com but check into an actual store first, save on Shipping & Handling and all the BS if you need to return it for any reason.
