While everyone knows who the best players were to play in the NHL, I'm curious as to who were the best to lace up skates in the WHA. In seven short seasons, which players made lasting impressions upon the ill-fated World Hockey Association?

The WHA was before my time and other than Vaclav Nedomansky (whose story I shared with you a little while ago), the names I associate with the league are Hull and Howe.
They were the true 'faces' of the league, although Gartner, Hedberg, the Nilssons and the 'pre-Oiler youth' guys like Gretzky and Messier also come to mind..

Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull added a bit of credibility to the league and then there's that Gretzky kid you may have heard about. For the most part though WHA consisted of players who were not quite NHL calibre at the time. Most teams did have some high priced talent though, but those 3 were the most notable names.

Gretzky didn't play in the league that long. Hull and Hedberg were huge for a while. Tardif won a few scoring titles. Lacroix and Cloutier won a couple as well. Shaky Walton won one title. Pick one.

Although not there for very long, Wayne Gretzky was the best. He played for the Indianapolis Racers.
