when people have illigal files on their computer that could get them aressted, whay do people always tell them to destroy the computer? couldent they just destroy the hard drive and then replace it with a new hard drive? Wouldent that just destroy the files? Is there a problem with this?? (Don't worry i am just curiouse i don't have any illigal files)

ok yes but what does the IP adress have to do with this. I have herd that IP adresses (at least i am pretty sure it was an i IP adress) can never be changed. And if that is true then wont the person who you downloaded the files from be able to get your IP adress, and hack your computer later??

Destroying the Hard drive will work, but all you REALLY need to do is destroy the data. Usiny a disc scrubber that writes 7 consecusive 1s and 0s over disc is good enough. Mind you a simple delete and defragment is good enough unless the police already have an idea of what's there.

There are ways the government can get files from a destroyed hard drive. and fo that matter they can install the hard drive into another computer and get the evidence from that

Yes, just destroy the harddrive! The other answers are out of ignorance, and paranoia I'm afraid!

meh, take the hardrive and drive an axe in it a few times, or a sledgehammer, throw it in the sewer, theres plenty of things to do with it...they say destroy the computer because their naive, and wanna cost you money
