Let's see, those who saw combat: Washington, Madison (only President to see combat as President), Monroe, Jackson, Harrison, Taylor, Pierce, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, B. Harrison, McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, L. Johnson (his experience has been debated), Ford, George H.W. Bush. Others served while never seeing combat (some only for brief turns in the militia): Tyler, Carter, Nixon, Reagan, Arthur (during the Civil War, but never saw combat), Lincoln, Fillmore (part of a New York militia unit). A Johnson was the military governor of Tennessee during the Civil War and held rank but wasn't a real military officer. George W. Bush (his committment has been debated).

Many never were in the military: J. Adams, T. Jefferson, J.Q. Adams, Van Buren, Polk, Buchanan, Cleveland (bought a substitute during the Civil War), Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover (but played an important part in World War I), F. Roosevelt (tried to enlist in the Navy but had Scarlet Fever) and Clinton.

Presidents who actually served active duty in combat that spring immediately to my mind include:

George Washington
Andrew Jackson
Ulysses Grant
Rutherford B. Hayes
James Garfield
William McKinley
Theodore Roosevelt
Harry S Truman
Dwight D. Eisenhower
John F. Kennedy
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Gerald Ford
George H.W. Bush (The current president's father)

This is most likely incomplete.

War veterans who later became President of the United States:

George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, Franklin Pierce, Abraham Lincoln, US Grant, James Garfield, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush.

Not all seen combat, such as Lincoln in the Blackhawk War.

BTW. Ronald Reagan was not born in California, but he was more a Californian than Hillary Clinton is a New Yorker.

K, George Washington, ZacharyTyler, James Polk, Hiriam Ulysses Grant, George H. W. Bush, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, Andrew Jackson, just a few. None were concerned about the common man... well maybe Jackson he did have a giant spiked punch bowl and a party in the white house.

yes, W's daddy GHB is a real decorated war hero
George Washington, LBJ, Ike, Richard Nixon, US Grant, Jimmy Carter was even in the navy. Many more, it was only after WW11, and the Vietnam war when our presidents, Clinton and W seem to not want put their ambitions aside, and their butts on the line for our country. And yes Reagen never saw a day of battle, he made propaganda war films. Not to say that it was not a worthy thing, but Reagen and his men were able to pass it off as putting his life on the line.

W jumped ahead with his daddy connections in the Texas Air National guard, and in those days national guards rarely ever deplored out of the country

Presidents that worried about the common man that served in the military in wartime? Washington and Jimmy Carter.

One was first, one was worst.

There have been many presidents who served during wartime, however I think few actually gave a damn about common people.
