Is it decided within each division, East, Cental, West or is it decided based on first thru last place within the whole league?

In each league there are 4 teams that are eligible for the playoffs.
So you'd have the:
American League West Division Winner
American League Central Division Winner
American League East Division Winner
-Of all the remaining American league teams the team with the best record will be the wild card winner.
You've the same process in the National League.
Making up the 8 teams eligible for post-season play. You've on wild-card from each team- and this makes the season more interesting. For example both the Yankees are 4 games behind the Red Sox but only a half game out in the American league Wildcard race.
The Dodgers are 5.5 back in the NL West but only 2 back in the Wildcard.

Major league is broken down by the NL and the AL then each is broken down into 3 divisions. So the top teams in each division get a spot in the playoff. Then the team out of the whole Conference without a playoff spot with the best record will get the wildcard. Then once the playoff start the team in the wildcard will play the team with the best record that is not in their division. This is why the Boston Red Sox would play the New York Yankees in the second round and not the first round

The wildcard is an at-large berth for each league; a team's division doesn't matter (except for playoff pairings). The second-place team with the best record earns the WC berth. If two teams are tied for the WC, they hold a one-game playoff (NL 1998 and 1999). If more than two teams are tied, MLB has plans for it (but this has never yet happened).
The wildcard is seeded #4 per league regardless of its record. The pairings in the Division Series (first round) are 1-4 and 2-3 UNLESS the wildcard is from the same division as the #1 seed. In that case, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4.

The wild card comes from each league.
It is the 2nd place with the best record.
If the wild card plays the team with the best record in that league. Unless it is from the same division. Then the wild card team would play the team owth the 2nd best record.

The best record of the remaing teams that didn't win their division is the wild card. One from each league.

any team with in al or nl ,thats not In first place Is elgeble for the wild card.So the team with the best record that did not win there division wins the (al or nl) wild card.
