I have hard which was previously running as a master drive. I hooked it up as a slave and now I can only read it in safe mode. When I try to format the slave drive from Disk Management it goes upto 99% and then say 'hard was not formatted' I can't access in normal mode. I keep getting errors. I disabled all background software....even anti-virus. Nothing doing.
My OS is windows XP. P4. Can someone help me. I want to know why this is happening. If any more information about my computer is needed let me know.

I believe you need some kind of software to set up the second drive as a slave drive. It needs to be partitioned and then formated and this software usually comes with boxed hard drives or you can buy the software separately. I don't know any by brand names but many different ones are at your local software supplier. If you want to keep the data on your old drive then I suggest either copying the data to your new drive before you partition the old drive or buying an external USB harddrive enclosure and using an external USB port.

the question is why have you put the windows master disk as a slave.... and have you got windows installed on the new hard drive? reason being you can only have one instant of windows running on one computer,

meaning both your hard drives have windows on them... so it dose not know which drive to boot from,,, now what as happened is windows as wrote to the master boot record, on both hard drives,

what you need to do is boot up the system about 10 seconds after you boot up keep pressing the F8 key until it come up start computer in safe mode, go down to start in DOS mode. and hit enter,,

your monitor will come up with a black screen.. when you see C:\type in format d: should look like this
C:\format D:

after you have typed it press the enter key, it will ask ... are you sure "Yes" hit enter again and it will start to format d:\ drive

now this is assuming d:\ drive is your second hard drive. and you have windows on the new hard drive,, if not things will got wrong ... and you will need to reinstall windows again,,,

you are able to try your restoration CD, nevertheless commit it to memory will probable get rid of all your information interior the technique. If that concerns no longer, then provide it a shot. be confident to bypass into bios first and make confident the CDchronic is earlier the tricky drives interior the boot order. one element i could recommend is to open up the case on your workstation (in case you do no longer plan to deliver it back for guarantee restoration, in case you do, then do no longer open the case) and hear the trickychronic. verify the connections, skill the workstation up and hear thechronic. Does it have an extremely nasty intense-pitch sound to it? Does it make clunking noises? Does it make any noise in any respect? incredibly loud intense-pitch noise and clunking is undesirable, yourchronic is probable toast and could could desire to get replaced. It occurs, and once you least assume it, it fairly is why human beings say backup your stuff. i'm uncertain if E-gadget locks their restoration disks to artwork on merely particular length tricky drives, you're able to desire to purchase a brand newchronic and drop it in, then reset your bios and do a save interior the bios after a reboot and verify out your restoration CDs. it incredibly is a 50/50 possibility that it will the two artwork or no longer artwork, its tricky to declare. you additionally can take it to a working laptop or workstation save you have faith and enable them to work out if thechronic is even readable. they are going to be waiting to take the trickychronic out of the gadget and connect it to a workbench gadget and see if thechronic's report gadget could additionally show up.
