I just want an honest opinion.
If a person not black uses the N word, black people will consider it an uttermost insult, and rigtfully so.
But I dont understand is why blacks say it (especially those "gangsta" personna). Arent they really allowing themselves to be insulted by themselves or is there something that I am not getting here?
An insult is an insult, that shouldnt make it okay for anyone to say it, blacks or not.

Honestly I can't understand why people get so bent out of shape when other people ask questions like this. It doesn't matter how many times the question is asked. It's actually good that it's asked because people need to know what's up. And furthermore you don't have to answer the question if you don't like what's being asked. As a black person I can tell you that I don't like the word at all. I never have. I don't use it. I'm also not going to give you some bull s**t explanation for why black people use the word. Some black people think that they're taking claim to the n word. They are misguided. No one owns words. Language is for everyone to use. It's true that the word is rooted in racism. But the fact that some people use the word and call it something else means that YES anyone can use the word and shouldn't have to worry about threats against them. The meanings of words aren't all the same. There is different slang. There are different dialects. This is true. But people are allowed to speak it. Language belongs to no one. Am I not allowed to speak Spanish words? Yes I am. This is silly. If you make an issue of someone speaking a word simply because of the color of their skin then you are just as racist as people who use the n word with racist intentions. I don't like the n word, but I'm not any more offended when a white person says it than I am when a black person says it. Either you like a word or you don't. And if a word carries different meanings then judge it according to the attitude of the person speaking and the context in which it's used. If you judge it according to race then you are making race an issue. YOU ARE RACIST IF YOU DO THIS. There's no getting around this. Words mean what they mean. If you dispute the meaning then provide the meaning, but don't restrict use based upon race. You can't do this out of one side of your mouth while crying racism out of the other side of your mouth. That's hypocrisy. Plain and simple. And anyone who says it's always used as a term of endearment by black people is either stupid or lying.

Not all black people use the N word. I don't. It's usually the dumb, ignorant blacks that love using the n word. Sad too because that means that there are a whole lot of ignorant black people.

seems to me white people are more obsessed with using this word than anyone else - there are hundreds of thousands of words in the english language that they can use. WHy must they worry about this word??

Some people take crack - does that mean everybody should do it too?

Just because someone hears SOME black people using it, does not make it ok to use. I HATE hearing it. Myself and MOST OTHER black people dont use the word as it is deeply offensive.

The "N word" is a completely digusting word. Anyone who uses it in any form is the exact definition of the word...IGNORANT!!!

End of story!

Why don't you ask one of your black friends, if you have any...Have them sit you down and run it all down to you from the beginning. If they're really your friend, they'll give you the honest answer that you seek. Surely you mustn't have any colored buddies, cuz if you did, this question would've propelled you to ask them a long time ago. I agree with (Ashley), who suggests that you check all the answers on this that have been discussed on here alot already.

I personally don't think it should be used at all, but here's my answer:

Some black people have "flipped" the definition of the n word to mean something different when used between black people. When it is said from another race to a black person, the old meaning is inferred.

N***er = IN chains (negative)
N***a = WEARING the chains (positive)
