To be clear your vagina is inside your body, internal. You can not see your vagina. With this you should not be "washing your vagina" in the shower.
However you should wash your external genitalia which is onthe outside of your body, what you can see when you stand naked in front of the mirror--this is called your Vulva. External genitalia=vulva. You should wash your vulva with soap and water in the shower. Use an unscented/sensitive skin soap, Dove unscented is highly recommended to wash your vulva in the shower. If you use a scented soap or body wash use that on the rest of your body, not your vulva. Only use unscented soap on your vulva. Also, never, ever douche or use feminine scented sprays or scented pads/tampons they can often cause vaginal infections such as yeast or BV.

I usually use a type of body wash to wash the oil off my skin, if i just use water i can't get the oil off my skin. I will continue to use some good smelling soap because i like to be clean.

If you force to much soap/water into the vagina you can 'kill' healthy bacteria, and increases the chance of infection. It cleans it's self, so no need to worry.

The outside of the outer labia (where the hair grows) can be washed with your normal body wash/soap.

Between the labia cna be washed with plain water.

The vagina itself requires NO WASHING!!!! It is self cleansing.

Using anything to clean inside the vagina can lead to infection.

for my outer lips I use regular body soap. But for my inner lips I only use water. the tissue in that area is very sensitive, and can become irritated very easily with harsh soaps.

It's not good to use soap down there. It cleans itself and using soap can disrupt the acid levels down there leading to infection. Douching is even worse for causing problems.

Water is just fine.

i use to use soap too but then my friends told me that their teacher said it was bad to use soap because the chemicals in the soap were harmful and could make you sterile i don't think that happens in all cases but stop using it just in case. plainly use water you'll be fine

You should definitely use something mild to wash your crotch with. I use Dove bar in the shower and also use it for my crotch. (Don't wash your vagina, that's inside your body, and it cleans itself nicely, which is what discharge is all about).
