I've started using Xtra to save money. I'm now on my 3rd bottle and find it cleans my clothes just as well as Gain & Tide. The only problem I have is that it doesn't smell as good as Gain or Tide, although it does smell good. But I use Downy fabric softner and that makes my clothes smell good. Good luck. 2D

Years ago I was told Tide was also packaged as XTRA (have no proof). I began using it and found it works well. For Stains or Grease Spots - I pour a few drops of XTRA on spot and use a soft toothbrush to rub in circular motion to get detergent deep into each fiber of the material weeve. I seldomly need to re-touch the stain. If I do, I then use a few drops of Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and rub with toothbrush. Dawn has never let me down. Also, you can't go wrong with 1/2 - 1 Cup 20 Mule Borateen to brighten colors and add life to whites (good removal for any kind of body ordor, too).

I have tried many different laundry detergents in my search for the least expensive with good cleaning. I have also read many of the reports in Consumer Reports magazine. I have found that Tide is my favorite. It seems that Tide is also the favorite detergent of Consumer Reports. I have used xtra and I did not care for it. I have also tried the Arm and Hammer, Gain, Wisk and Era. I have used Tide for many years and have not found anything better. If you watch the sales you can get it at a very good price. I prefer the liquid over the powder though. The Costco brand (Kirkland) is second best to Tide.

I've used them all. Tide, Gain, Kirkland you name it. They all work pretty much the same. Look people, laundry detergent isn't rocket science, and you don't need a lab to make it. The key ingredient is advertizing, which is why Tide has so much pull. Just because it got a better Con Rep score doesn't mean that its better than its competition. Frankly, I don't trust review companies all that much. Its too easy to be on the take. Also, Tide did no better job than cheap Ariel at cleaning my coveralls. And who the hell cares about how it smells so long as it doesn't stink. A few days in the closet that smell is gone. But if it isn't, I'd worry about the chemicals still on my clothes to make them smell good? Also, if you have spots, Shout them out. Or go online and see how to make your very own spot remover, you won't be disappointed. .

Not unless clothes are really soiled. You can add more detergent if clothes are really soiled and soak for at least 30 min. before washing.I love the new oxy cleaner additive. It works great on colors and whites.I soak clothes overnite and then run the next morning.I'm a laundry freak and love my whites to be the whitest.Bleach really does a number on fabric but sometimes is necessary.Bluing removes the yellow tinge of bleach and perspiration stains.

people think you are talking about the brand called xrta.. not using extra detergent.... i am assumign you meant the brand "xtra"... personally to me all laundry deteregnt is the same... it all does the same job.. unless you have bad stains then get like tide or a good stain remover.. but i almost always use the cheapest and dont notice any difference in my clothes as opposed to using expensive deteregent
