I live near Chicago and it's been stormy all day and all through last night. Today when it was actually calm, it got cloudy and I automatically knew that there was something weird going on and then the tornado sirens went off and afterwards I still saw the funnel cloud.
So, how do I know that something similar is happening at night time, without looking online or turning on the weather channel?

Just in case it does happen.

Your best bet would be to invest in a tone alert radio. This won't cost much and will wail when a tornado warning is issued. You can also purchase portable ones for the car or your person.

It's very important to remember that a tornado is extremely difficult to spot at night. Lightning may help, but this is dangerous and doesn't always occur when a tornado is present.

If in doubt, bookmark (or link on your desktop) a direct link to an animated version of your radar so you can quickly check whether a tornado warning has been issued in your area and see where the storm is heading.

One last thing: if you hear the tornado sirens sound outside of testing, take cover.

You may be able to see the clouds when they are illuminated by lightning flashes. If you get large hail, anything golf ball sized or bigger, you should consider that storm capable of producing a tornado. Radio, television and internet are really your best bets.

At night you are pretty limited to seeing things by illumination from lightning. Sometimes a tornado's presence can be detected by the flashing (arcing) emitted by power lines being snapped or blown together.
