"Gravity's Rainbow" by Thomas Pynchon. His style of writing is astounding and so much fun. He throws in lots of obscure references that can be fun to discover, plus loads of useful and some totally useless historical facts. The story takes place in the waning days of World War II in Europe as soldiers try to find the German rocket scientists. It's a huge book that you can enjoy getting lost in. Definitely not a fast read, but one of the most rewarding and deep ones you'll get. Every page was a delight to read. I mean, who can resist giant adnoids invading London, a trip down a crap-encrusted toilet in search of a harmonica, and the entire Hansel and Gretel scenario. Not to mention the asides about the obliteration of the Dodos. There are entire wikis devoted to it.

It's definitely not a children's book. Or even a young adult book. Better be at least in your 20s before trying to tackle it.

I have had such literary epiphanies a few times actually. One such book was The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas by 19th-century Brazilian author Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis.

I loved his wordplay and prose (and I must give some credit to the translator as I was reading both the Portuguese and English editions, since Portuguese is not my native tongue and I admit I needed a little help), his intertwining senses of the comic and the heartbrteaking, and his marvelous perception of human behavior that transcends time and place.

A brief description: written as a posthumously composed memoir (according to the fictional author Bras Cubas, a superior way of writing memoirs, since a dead writer can be frank about events). Bras Cubas's life is less interesting than the book's style and structure: 160 brief chapters in which Bras Cubas comments both on his life and the novel's composition. The fictional author was a politician, writer, and celebrity who has an affair with the wife of a friend. His sister wants him to marry a shy young woman, but she dies before the wedding. A school friend preaches the gospel of a new secular religion but never writes a long-anticipated book on the subject. Meanwhile, Bras Cubas is working on a poultice to relieve melancholy.

Other books by this author may be better written (Quincas Borba or Dom Casmurro?), but this one is my favorite.

Haha. I have that feeling after nearly every book I read. If I'm really not enjoying a book, I won't continue to read it.That's why I love reading - it's so satisfying. So mouth wateringly good. Now I want a cupcake. Thats not weird is it? Wanting a cupcake while having an image of a book in my head?

Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer.
It was so good because the descriptions in it were very colorful and the writing was so fluid. I swear you could hear someone reading the book to you.

Also,
The Book Thief because it's such a touching story
