If they're the same price and you're attempting to play PC games...I'd say the 7800 GTX.
If you're building an HTPC and want on the fly HD decoding, choose the 8500 GT.
Don't worry about DirectX 10. The newer games that will utilize this newer API are still based on a DirectX 9 architecture so that game developers don't shun majority of the market that has yet to switch. If you don't have Vista and don't plan on getting it the next year or two...there's no use for a DX10 compatible card anyways as XP won't support the newer DX10 API.
I don't know if you're aware, but many games are designed using the same software "engine". Check my source for a performance chart that shows how these cards stack up on today's most common game engines.
*****BREAK******
In my first source, the lowest 8-series Nvidia card they have benchmarked is the 8600 and I took the liberty of comparing the 7800GTX to that one. Remember, the 8500 is an even bigger step down from the 8600 series.
The second source link is a comparison between the 8600 and 8500. The 8500 hardly competes in most current games. The goal is to maintain an average of 60 frames per second for smooth over all game play. However, 30FPS is considered the standard and is certainly playable. Anything below 30 isn't going to be much fun.
I vote 7800GTX.

Hi, the 7800gtxs are older than the 8500 gt but i heard from www.custompc.co.uk that the 8500GT are a card to keep away from because well they are basically crap. A 7800 gtx will have a high clock speed and therefore be very powerful.
This was part of the review of the 8500GT: No card in this price range is ever going to wow you with its graphical prowess, but the 7600 GT is clearly a more sensible purchase than the 8500 GT for games.
Now they are saying the 7600GT is better and trust me the 7800GTX is far better than the 7600 so in my opinion go for the 7800gtx its just older now.
Take a look at a massive graphics card test on http://www.custompc.co.uk/labs/601145/graphics-cards/products.html and read what is best for you for the price range.
Hope this helps
Mark

For current gaming performance, get the 7800.
For vista and the future, get the 8500.
Right now, the 7800 is better, but when direct x 10 dominates, the 8500 will be of some use.

8500GT is DX10 and has superior HD video. BUT in games, it is just comparable to the 7300GT. If you just want superior gaming performance under a DX9 set up, then the 7800GTX beats the hell out of a 8500GT. 7800GTX performance could be comparable to that of 8600GTS.
